This year’s Rob Haywood competition took place later than usual on the 25th of November 2018. Thank you to the ten entrants who came to compete and support the event in memory of the great Rob Haywood. We will never forget his trademark look with the large sunglasses and safari hat!
For the first time in the competition’s history, there was a tie for first place! The tie was between Chris Mayoh and Alex Lerczak, but a shared victory was considered fair on this occasion.
We have had a difficult year because of injuries and illness, but some positive news to end the year is that the B team managed to remain unbeaten throughout the Winter League. They gained promotion from the fifth division into the fourth which they will compete in during Spring 2019. Well done to all who have played in that team!
Winsford A were relegated from Division 1 in the 2017/18 Winter League due to injury and illness that plagued the team. After a strong effort, the A Team managed to get promoted back into Division 1 in the 2017/18 Spring League. Winsford B held their place in Division 4 in both the Winter and Spring League, providing the opportunity for some of the Club’s up-and-coming players to get some more match practice.
The Summer Season is almost upon us. We are entering three Men’s teams this year, as well as our Mixed Team. The Mixed Team start first on April 22nd, with the Men’s B and C playing on the 24th, and the Men’s A playing on the 26th. Good luck to all of the teams this year! Fixtures and results can be found here: http://smctennis.co.uk/.
The Club Cup finals went ahead during the Saturday afternoon of the 23rd of September 2017. Congratulations to all of the finalists of this year’s Club Cup, and a big thanks to those who came to watch, support, and help arrange the event!

The results from the 2017 Player Types and Most Improved Players vote that took place during the Club Cup Finals Day can be seen and downloaded here: 2017 Player Types and Most Improved Players.
The most improved man of the year was Alex Toomey, and the most improved woman of the year was Jackie Penn. Congratulations to both!
This year’s Rob Haywood competition took place during the Sunday afternoon of the 11th of June 2017 and was a great success with twelve entrants once again, with three matches being played simultaneously each round. Thanks to all of those who supported the annual event which is held in memory of the legendary Rob Haywood. I have fond memories of playing with Rob in my first few seasons at Winsford and helping him pick which of his three rackets he should use each match (rackets he had bought from a car boot sale for a total of around £3 or £4!). Such a character!
A big congratulations to Alex Toomes and Lewis Penn who were the competition’s first junior entrants, and they certainly held their own! Jackie Penn was our only female entrant this year, but she also proved her ability on the day! Thanks also go to Steve McCormack for organising the tournament’s format, and also to Steve Harris for bringing and manning the BBQ. Despite it being covered in cob webs and seeing the spiders running from the BBQ as he opened the lid, he still managed to cook us some well-done food.
This year’s entry fees for the competition were donated to Harry Johnson who will be running 5km and swimming 3.8km to raise money for The Sick Children’s Trust. The Trust is supporting the Johnson family tremendously while Harry’s brother, Max, awaits a new heart. The Club misses you all and look forward to seeing you all back on court some time in the near future!
The winner of this year’s closely contested competition was Alex Lerczak, although he only beat Chris Knight by a single point! Ste McCormack also came third, but we all suspect that that had something to do with him organising who played with and against who each round…
The first of the men’s matches in the South & Mid Cheshire Summer Tennis League start tonight (Tuesday April 25th), with Winsford Men’s B Team being the Club’s first team to play this summer. Winsford Men’s A, C, and the newly formed D team all begin their matches on Thursday (April 27th), and Winsford’s Mixed A Team begin this Sunday (30th). Good luck to all of the teams this year! Fixtures and results can be found here: http://smctennis.co.uk/.
A few Club members went up to meet with Chris and Matthew Winward from Cliff Dickenson & Son for a photo before the season began. The Club is extremely grateful for the sponsorship that it receives from the business every year, especially with them supporting our decision to add a fourth men’s team for the summer!
To see the photo, please see: Club Members with Chris and Matthew Winward from Cliff Dickenson & Son.
Unfortunately, we were unable to enter a Women’s team for the South & Mid Cheshire Summer Tennis League due to injury and illness, so we will try again for 2018. However, we are entering a Men’s D team which will start in the fifth division. This will provide the perfect opportunity for those who are wanting to start playing more competitive tennis (both adults and juniors). Steve Harris will be captaining this team. Please contact him on 07470216884 if you are interested in playing for the D team.
The Club has also been liaising with Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC) about the plans for our Club and the other two sets of courts (two hard and two grass) that have been previously operated by the Council. Unfortunately, these have been significantly underused for the past several years. As both parties want to see these courts used positively again, CWAC has turned over the management of the middle two hard courts to our Club after cleaning and repainting them. They have also replaced the fencing around the grass courts and are working to get the grass courts ready for use in the summer! The Club is hoping to take over the management of all six courts in the near future when our lease is renewed. We really appreciate all the hard work and ongoing support from CWAC as we continue with our funding applications to further the Club’s development.
As well as having a membership scheme at the Club, we now also have a pay and play scheme for non-members who can book a court and play for £6 per hour per court. We are just working on the booking system now to make it as easy and simple as possible for all involved.
Happy New Year to all!
Winsford Lawn Tennis Club has had an amazing 2016 with the Club receiving eight trophies in September for our success in the 2015/16 Winter and Spring Season, and the 2016 Summer Season. The Club also had a perfect finish to the year with Winsford A and Winsford B winning division 3 and 5 respectively and gaining promotion in the 2016 Winter League.
The Club will face much tougher challenges in 2017, both on and off court, as we try to build on our success and develop the Club and its facilities. The Club had its Annual General Meeting in November and discussed various plans and opportunities for the Club. Minutes from that meeting can be downloaded and viewed here: AGM Minutes Nov 2016.
Congratulations to Ryan and Lewis Penn, aged 14 and 10 respectively, who played in their first SMC League match for Winsford Lawn Tennis Club on Sunday the 2nd of October. The Club’s members were very impressed with Ryan and Lewis’ incredible performance on court, showing a level of skill and maturity beyond their young years. Move over Bryan Brothers, the Penn Brothers are coming!
